Ayurvedic Care
for Kidney Health
Kidney Stone
The Ayurvedic treatment of kidney stones comprises balancing doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and involves a mixture of dietary modifications, herbal medicine, and changes in lifestyles. Essential herbs such as Punarnava, Gokshura, and Pashanbheda help to dissolve & reduce pain from the stones as well as support kidney function. A treatment plan will often entail increasing intake of water, taking Pitta pacifying foodstuffs, and practicing stress-reducing activities such as yoga and meditation. This is an all-encompassing approach that not only relieves symptoms but also promotes general health with the aim of preventing the reoccurrence of kidney stones.
Symptoms
Renal calculi, which are commonly called kidney stones, can bring forth a variety of signs due to factors like size, place, and obstruction. This is a listing of the common symptoms linked with kidney stones:
Severe Pain
Intense pain in either the back or side, usually below the ribs. It may extend to the lower abdomen and groin area as well.
Difficulty Passing Urine
Sometimes, this stone may hinder urine from flowing, thereby making it hard for the patient to pee.
Urinary Urgency
Having a stone could result in this feeling of frequently wanting to urinate despite making little urine due to some irritations caused by it.
Urinary Symptoms
Burning sensation due to urinating. Feeling of needing to urinate more often than usual even if only small quantities are passed each time.
Sweating
Sudden sweat production, often with clamminess or restlessness, represents how body reacts to irritation.
Fever and Chills
Fever and chills indicate that an infection accompanies stones, which means one should see a treatment or a doctor immediately.
Process of Ayurvedic Treatment
Initial Assessment
The practitioner will collect information on medical background, symptoms, diet, and personal habits, among other things, to identify dosha imbalance and the type and size of calculi.
Customized Treatment Plan
Once the assessment has been completed, a tailored approach is necessary, whereupon dietary guidelines/ restrictions and herbal medicine prescriptions can be provided.
Continous Control & Change
The treatment plan keeps on updating and adapting itself as per the patient’s progression stage, ensures a customized approach for efficient management and prevention of kidney stones.
Key Principles
Based on ancient Indian medicine, Ayurveda focuses on balancing the body’s doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) to prevent and treat kidney stones.
Ayurvedic doctors ascertain if there is any imbalance in the individual’s dosha so that they can administer their treatments accordingly. Kidney stones are often associated with an imbalance in the Pitta dosha, which regulates heat and metabolism.
One should eat a Pitta pacifying diet. These include:
- Increased Hydration: Taking more fluids preferably water-based ones like herbal teas.
- Fruits and Vegetables: Include cooling foods like cucumbers, melons, leafy greens, etc.
- Avoid Certain Foods: Eat less spicy foods with no oil or salt content or those high in oxalates, such as spinach, beets, and nuts.
Herbal Remedies: Various herbs facilitate the elimination of kidney waste products and relieve stone formation-related signs:
- Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa): Known for its diuretic properties.
- Gokshura (Tribulus Terrestris): Assists in breaking down stones while improving urinary wellbeing.
- Varuna (Crataeva nurvala): Helps remove calculi from systems causing less pain.
- Pashanbheda (Bergenia ligulata): The name itself means “stone breaker”; it is used to dissolve stones.
Treatments such as panchakarma may be carried out to cleanse the body of toxic substances and improve kidney function. Medicated enema (Basti) and purgation therapy (Virechana) are standard in Ayurvedic practice.
Stress reduction, regular exercise, and yoga are recommended to improve overall health and prevent the recurrence of stones. Some specific yoga postures, such as the wind-relieving pose Pavanamuktasana or the cobra pose Bhujangasana, can also help support kidney function.
One should drink water infusions like with coriander seeds or a mix of barley and water which will ensure that kidneys remain healthy all through their lives.
